I was recently lucky enough to be invited to play in a corporate golf day at Joondalup Country Club.
As one of the best golf courses in Australia, Joondalup was in pristine condition with perfectly manicured fairways and greens running true.
Many of the competitors took the opportunity to combine their Friday afternoon game at this great complex, with an overnight or weekend break at the resort’s fantastic hotel and enjoy all of its pools, restaurants and day spas.
One of the great features of the day was the services of a PGA professional who walked along the driving range offering free advice to people hitting balls before their round. I have played golf for over 30 years and like to think that I can fix most things in my swing myself, but a trained eye can often see things that are causing problems and offer a solution.
We have all experienced unsolicited swing coaching from people in our playing groups, who often can barely break 100 themselves, but I am always open for some advice from a professional.
He watched me hit a few shots and asked me a couple of questions. He then got me to change one thing. The next shot was the best I had hit that day, and probably for the last 6 months. That worked, so after another dozen or so shots, we tried another small change. The first few shots were slightly off but after I got the hang of what he was trying to get me to do, it all came together. I focused on the two swing thoughts he had given me for the round and found my ball striking was greatly improved from my last time on the course.
After my round, I made an appointment for an hour’s lesson with the young professional from the range who had given me such helpful advice and I am looking forward to further improvements in my scoring.
The small tweaks I made to my swing that day made a huge difference to the game I played, and meant I had an even more enjoyable day out than I thought I was going to. It’s hard not to have a good time at a corporate golf event, but playing decent golf makes it all the more fun.
